What is Lucuma? The lucuma (Pouteria lucuma) often spelt lacuma, is a subtropical fruit native to the Andean valleys of Peru, which has been cultivated since 200AD. It is also grown in Bolivia, Costa Rica and in the sub-tropical foothills of California. Lucuma fruit is either round or oval shaped, with green skin and bright yellow flesh. The Europeans discovered it in the 1500s and named it ‘egg fruit’ on account of its texture, which is similar to a hard boiled egg’s yolk.
